John F. Kennedy is credited with popularizing the aphorism “a rising tide lifts all boats,” to suggest that investing in economic development can benefit everyone who participates in the economy. Forbes

When most of us think about the economy, we're talking about money or business, but I'd like to consider other [more important?] types of economies. For example, a rising tide of food quality and access benefits all of society by keeping everyone healthy so they can contribute, rather than cost.

A rising tide in education (including academic/university, technical/trade schools and life skills/family & home-school) creates a diverse and resilient society that works as a community.

A rising tide of plant predominant eating reduces demand for factory farming, helps ease the burden on our healthcare system, and promotes a habitable planet for future generations.

Supporting businesses and non-profits that aim to lift others up is a rising tide in and of itself.

As an Adjunct Professor at Westchester Community College, I aim to help my neurodivergent students learn how to create their own delicious and healthy food. When they succeed, their health improves, confidence grows, AND we all reap the benefits. Some may even work in food service one day!

If you live locally to me, you may have heard of the Pleasantville Cottage School, a residential treatment center for troubled and traumatized youth. Working with these adolescents requires perseverance and creativity! But I know that they can never heal - physically or emotionally - without the base of good nutrition. And I'm not the only person on that campus trying to raise the tide. Volunteers and staff constantly comfort, coach and engage them - knowing full well that this may play a critical role in their ability to contribute to society.

I had a bigger picture in mind when I founded Green Bites. Yes, of course, I want to help individuals get healthier while enjoying their food! But I also want to do my part to stem the tide of climate change and help our planet grow healthier! Part of my “rising tide” philosophy includes partnering with, or just raising awareness of, other businesses with similar goals. A collaborative economy will be far more successful than a competitive one.
